Workforce Investment Act
Through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), employment and training services are provided to eligible persons looking for employment, as well as to employers who are looking for trained personnel.

- On-the-Job Training: Training individuals on the job to meet the specific needs of employers is the goal of the OJT activity. Training contracts are written with private employers containing training outlines and objectives. The employer trains eligible persons on the job, and receives partial reimbursement of the costs involved with this training. The length of training is negoitiated with the employer and is influenced by the skill level and job duties required of the position.

- Classroom Training (CRT): Occasionally, formalized skill training in a classroom setting is necessary for an individual to become employable. Educational institutions throughout the area are utilized to provide this training in ocupations that have an identified employer demand. Realistic career goals are discussed with the applicant through employment counseling before commitments are made. Tuition, books, and fees are generally provided through classroom training component. To be eligible for services, persons must be economically disadvantaged, U.S. citizens, and residents of the Western U.P. region.

Dislocated Worker Program: Basic readjustment and training services such as counseling, placement, on-the-job, and classroom training are available for eligible individuals. Under this legislation, a dislocated worker is defined as one who: ...has been terminated or laid off from employment, eligible for unemployment compensation, and unlikely to return to their previous job, or....has been terminated due to closure or substantial layoff from a plant or facility, or ....are long term employed, or ...were self-employed (including farmers) and are unemployed as a result of general economic conditions.

Summer Youth Employment Program: Economically disadvantaged youth ages 14-21 are eligible for full-time, temporary summer jobs at public and private non-profit worksites through this program. Employment is generally for a 10-week period and involves a remedial education activity for those persons that indicate a need for that service. Jobs pay minimum wage.
